It seems like anytime we’re talking about football these days (or really anything), we end up talking about coronavirus. It’s an important thing to talk about, especially in what is unarguably the most dangerous of the four major sports when it comes to potential outbreaks. The latest news came with Matthew Stafford being placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, but it remains unclear whether he tested positive or was just around someone who did.
Regardless, someone like Stafford is a perfect example of the tough decision surrounding whether or not to play. He’s got a family at home that includes a newborn and a potentially immunocompromised spouse, both important things to worry about when weighing the risks of playing this fall.
Question of the day: How many Detroit Lions players will opt out of the 2020 season?
My answer: I’d guess 4-5.
John Atkins is the lone Lion to make that call as of writing this, but I think it’s becoming clearer by the day that football simply won’t be safe. As the deadline to opt out approaches, I think a handful more players will get cold feet and opt out of the season.
