FTP (File Transfer Protocol), as a technology, is slowly becoming less and less popular. The main reason for this is, of course, the plethora of good cloud services out there.

Be that as it may, FTP is far from being obsolete. And, when it comes to handling FTP sessions, there's no app better than FileZilla.

FileZilla boasts the classic two-pane design found on most FTP clients out there. The interface is nothing to write home about in terms of looks, but it does a fine job at allowing you to upload and download files.

Simply drag and drop files from the left pane to the right one to transfer files. The file queue is displayed underneath the file tree panel and each process can be fully controlled by you.

FileZilla has next to no learning curve thanks to its user-friendly GUI, as well as the Quickconnect tool. This tool can help you get started by adding all the details of your connections and can store up to 10 logins.

The Site Manager is the place where you can access a series of more advanced features such as transfer settings, encryption options, proxy, server type, and so forth.

FileZilla is far from being a simple FTP client with a "pretty face." Part of its popularity is because it is cross-platform (it works on Windows, macOS, and Linux).

The other part of the reason has to do with its features. For starters, FileZilla supports FTP, FTP over SSL/TLS (FTPS), and SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol), it's available in many languages, it works with IPv6, and it comes with FTTP/1.1, SOCKS5, and FTP-Proxy support.

FileZilla is also very good at speeding up slow FTP servers. Thanks to its powerful Site Manager and Transfer Queue tools, the app picks up aborted downloads of large files (if the connection is dropped), and can even retain a useable link if the server is busy (thanks to its Keep Alive feature).

FileZilla's only real problem seems to be the decline in popularity of FTP as a technology. However, when it comes to FTP clients, you can't go wrong with FileZilla that has been around for over 20 years now.
