Democratic presidential contender Joe Biden Saturday accused President Trump of using “the lie” like notorious Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels in order to distort Biden’s image with the American people with 38 days remaining before the election.
Key Facts
In an interview with MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle, Biden said Trump has pressed the false notion that the former vice president is a socialist to try to win over moderate voters, particularly in the battleground state of Florida, according to The Hill which earlier reported on the interview.
“He’s sort of like Goebbels,” Biden said, adding, “You say the lie long enough, keep repeating it, repeating it, repeating it, it becomes common knowledge.”
Goebbels, one of Adolf Hitler’s closest associates and a staunch advocate for exterminating Jewish people during the Holocaust, was Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany and known for his persuasive speaking style.
Key Background
Florida, a critical battleground state in the race for the White House, is home to a large Hispanic community made up of many residents who came from, or whose families came from Cuba, which has had a socialist political system for decades. A fear that Biden leans too far to the left could sway some. Trump has trotted out a number of labels for Biden — including “sleepy Joe” — but none have had much impact on voter sentiment. Trump also has called Biden both too moderate and too liberal. The former vice president expressed optimism that voters will see a clear contrast between him and Trump, and he referenced an incident in June when Trump used force to break up a peaceful demonstration outside the White House for a photo op in front of a church. “I think people see very clearly the difference between me and Donald Trump. Trump is clearing protests in front of the White House that are peaceful with the military. This guy’s more [Fidel] Castro than [Winston] Churchill,” he said.
