Gorgeous scenery, dysfunctional family, and a healthy dose of drama and nostalgia seem to be the key ingredients to a hit show. At the very least, they’re the components of Paramount Network’s perennially popular Yellowstone, a sweeping western starring Kevin Costner that was picked up for its fourth season before its third season even aired.
The Season 3 finale ended with a literal bang, leaving plenty of questions to be answered by the upcoming season premiere. Here’s everything we know so far about the latest installment in the series.
What is Yellowstone about?
If you’re brand new to the world of the Dutton family, the premise is easy to follow. Yellowstone focuses on the Dutton family (in particular, patriarch John Dutton) and their eponymous ranch, which is the largest in the United States. Given its preeminence, it’s no surprise that the ranch is the target of many an attack—both physical and otherwise. The Duttons, of course, focus their efforts on protecting what’s theirs, for better or for worse.
Where did we leave off in Season 3?
The last several episodes of Season 3 revolved around the Duttons' ongoing struggle to keep their land. John Dutton faced a $500 million choice to either sell his property to Market Equities, or wait for the state of Montana to condemn the property. While two of his children (Beth and Kayce) sought to convince their father to accept the half-billion dollar offer, John Dutton refused. As such, the season finale saw a multi-party negotiation attempting to agree on next steps.
Unfortunately, no such conclusions were reached, and instead, a bomb was detonated, gun-wielding men stormed Kayce’s office, and John Dutton was shot on the side of the road. As such, it is currently unclear who among the Dutton family is still alive. The responsible party (or parties) behind the attacks also remain unknown.
When is Season 4 airing?
While we don’t have an exact air date quite yet, Season 4 is slated to air in the summer of 2021. Given that all three previous seasons have made their debut in June, it seems safe to assume that we’ll re-welcome the Duttons into our lives in June 2021.
Fans were previously worried that filming of the show would be postponed as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but thanks to a newly consolidated filming location, those concerns have not come to fruition. "We’re supposed to start mid-August, and we’re putting that together as best we can. I’m fortunate that this show shoots on a ranch in Montana. We’re going to shoot exclusively there this year, or in and around it," show creator Taylor Sheridan told Deadline.
On August 21, the filming location for the show, Chief Joseph Ranch, confirmed that work on the latest season had begun, and Forrie Smith Jr. teased his first day of filming of Season 4 in another Instagram post.
Can I get involved in the show?
If you’ve been waiting for your big break, Yellowstone Season 4 just might be it. Show producers are in search of extras who can be available from August through December. In a press release, the team noted, "Those who are selected to work on the project, as extras will be paid. Shooting will begin in August and we are looking to hire locals to work as extras on the Series through December. Filming will be in the Darby, Hamilton and Missoula areas. The casting call is open to men and women of all ethnicities, ages 9 or older," they wrote in a press release. The cast and crew are also following “strict COVID-19 protocols...for all filming activities...including no-cost pre-employment COVID-19 testing and social distancing etiquette before and during filming days.” If you’re interested in applying you’ll need to submit two photos and include your height, weight, and clothing sizes, best phone number to reach you at, and area where you live.
How can I watch previous seasons?
Come next summer, you can find Yellowstone on Paramount Network. In the meantime, however, you can watch the first two seasons of the hit series on Peacock, NBC’s new streaming service. Season 3 has yet to make an appearance on the platform (given that the finale just aired), but you can watch all episodes through either the Paramount Network (available to those with a cable TV service) or through Amazon (which will require individual episode purchases).
