Tom Hanks is finally the captain again.

In the trailer for Paul Greengrass's News of the World, Hanks plays former Civil War captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, who now travels the country regaling audiences with — you guessed it — the news of the world. He crosses paths along the way with a child (Helena Zengel) separated from her only living relatives, and vows to bring her home.

Based on the novel by Paulette Jiles, News of the World is adapted by screenwriter Luke Davies, with executive producers Steven Shareshian and Tore Schmidt.

News of the World premieres Dec. 25.
