SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO – A 37-year-old Gilroy man was arrested on suspicion of hitting a South San Francisco officer with a skateboard during a foot pursuit over the weekend, police said.
Officers were called to the 600 block of Gateway Boulevard at 11 a.m. Saturday for a report of fraudulent activity and contacted a man who was suspected of passing counterfeit bills, the South San Francisco Police Department said in a news release.
Police said the man ran from officers and, in the process, “intentionally” hit one in the leg with a skateboard.
A woman tried to help the man escape by stopping her vehicle in front of officers, police said. She later left the scene in a silver-colored Kia Soul, which police said was believed to be stolen.
Police said the man tripped while running and was taken into custody without further incident. He suffered minor injuries in the fall and was medically cleared before being taken to the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City, where he was booked on charges including assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, false impersonation, possession of counterfeit items, identity theft and resisting arrest.
The man was also booked for a parole violation and is being held without bail, according to jail records.
The officer who was hit was treated at a hospital for a complaint of pain to his leg and released, police said.
