5 Outerwear Trends You Need To Know

Following
This article is more than 3 years old.

When the temperature drops, it is time to bundle up and expand your outerwear arsenal. I’ve already shared some cozy ideas for staying warm when staying in, along with the ultimate fall layering item, but let’s talk coats and jackets for a moment, shall we?

Outerwear trends are interesting, because as quickly as trends tend to come and go, when it comes to jackets and coats, the trends are a bit more long lasting. That’s a good thing, since coats and jackets can be pricier investment pieces! So check out these trending styles and adopt the ones you like now, and know you’ll be looking stylish for seasons to come, too.

1) Leather Blazers

Work wear has shifted drastically in 2020, so it is only fitting that the blazer itself, a quintessential staple of corporate style, has received an edgy makeover as well. Leather blazers are such a stylish way to dress up anything from a T-shirt and jeans to bike shorts and sneakers. You can’t go wrong with a classic leather blazer in a neutral shade like black or brown, but you can also try a bright red or bold blue for a brighter style statement.

2) Shackets

The shirt-jacket, or “shacket” if you will, is the epitome of winter dressing in the age of quarantine. These thick button-downs are exactly as they seem, a hybrid between shirts and jackets, with the structure of a shirt but the warmth of your favorite outerwear. Plaid shackets are particularly popular for anyone looking to channel folklore-era Taylor Swift, but a shacket in a solid color with neat embellishments like studs or metallic buttons are also stylish.

3) Blanket Capes

Another trending style that epitomizes the cozy nature of spending most days inside is the blanket cape. If you’ve ever wished you could wander to the grocery store wearing your warm blanket but haven’t because people would look at you funny, consider test driving the blanket cape for a fashionable alternative that has all the comfort of your loungewear living.

4) Shearling Trim

Fur and faux fur trimmings on collars and sleeves are so chic, especially when done up in shaggy 70s inspired shearling. Take a style cue from Florence Pugh (above) and opt for a fur trimmed jacket in a bright orange or other bold color. Pastel shades are another popular option at the moment (so essentially, just look for furry coats that would be impossible to find in nature).

5) Cloaks

If there is just one winter dressing icon to turn to this year, let it be Nicole Kidman’s character Grace from HBO’s The Undoing, which just concluded this week. Her character loves to stalk around Central Park and the Upper East Side in floor-length coats of rich colors like royal purple, blood red, and this beautiful mossy green cloak. While most of her ensembles were the creations of a costume designer, I have a feeling everyone will be trying to get their hands on a jacket similar to this hooded style.
