Avril Lavigne is feeling drawn to the sea: The singer recently paid $7.8 million for a stunning home in Malibu perched on bluffs overlooking the beach. Set on a 0.63-acre lot, the contemporary-style residence spans a modest 3,455 square feet, but what it lacks in square footage, it more than makes up in attention-grabbing aesthetics and amenities. Though it was originally built in 1968, the house was completely redone by Malibu developer and designer Scott Gillen in recent years to reflect a more modern, clean-lined feel.

The single-story property features a large open floor plan with an impressive, grid-like exposed wood beam ceiling hovering over the living space, formal dining area, and galley-style kitchen. An entire wall of built-in shelves flank a wood-burning fireplace at one end of the great room, while the dining area features large glass doors that open out onto an expansive back patio overlooking the ocean. A cozy office space is situated unobtrusively in a far corner of the room, with built-in bookshelves and a desk.

There are a total of four bedrooms and three full and one partial bathroom on the premises, though one of the guest bedrooms is currently being used as a generously proportioned home gym. The main suite has its own wing and is accessible via a giant barn-style sliding door; the en suite bathroom is a revelation of white tile, with an oversize steam shower and claw-foot tub.

Out back, a fire pit and built-in grill are perfect for entertaining; a few steps down past a terraced garden, there’s a large rectangular pool with inset spa and a wooden deck for sunbathing. An outdoor dry sauna provides a luxurious refuge during colder weather, and a detached two-car garage has its own bedroom suite, which could be easily used for staff housing.
