Microsoft's Latest Garage App is For Recording Group Transcriptions (theverge.com) 12

Microsoft's newest Garage app, the company's brand for more experimental apps, is Group Transcribe, which lets groups of people capture real-time collective meeting transcriptions using their phones. It's available for free right now on iOS. From a report: "This app uses a multi-device approach to provide real-time, high quality transcription and translation, so users can be more present and productive during in-person meetings and conversations," Microsoft's Lainie Huston said in a blog post. Here's how it works. Everyone who wants to participate in the group transcription needs to download the Group Transcribe app. Then, one person kicks off a transcription, and they can invite others to join by sharing a five-letter conversation code, a QR code, or by joining the group transcription with nearby sharing over Bluetooth. Then, the app will begin transcribing the group's conversation, noting who said what. Group Transcribe can even also auto-translate things people say and show those translations in line as part of the transcription. Transcriptions are saved in the app so you can review or share them after a meeting.

  • Quote from MS blog: Group Transcribe supports languages spoken in 80+ locales including:âArabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Cantonese, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Latvian, Maltese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, and more.
  • Just more ways for MS to collect private or sensitive info in order to spam you "better". It's easier to store and sift text than audio itself.

  • Obligatory: MS can't think of an original idea, they are just copying Apple, and doing it on Apple's own platform, to boot!

    • Just yesterday, I saw an article about Mac users upset that Apple decided to drop the free app they made a while back for iOS to allow recording your musical ideas. It let people quickly add some appropriate backing drums and bass and so forth.

Apparently, Apple is now advising those musicians to just record their ideas with the regular old Voice Memos app instead.

Something like this group transcribe concept is what I would have expected Apple to come out with first, as an innovative new feature of one of i

  • Slashdot front page news.

This has never been an M$ friendly website, it should never become one. If M$ did something, it's because they are inherently evil and need to be disbanded.

  • It’s a duplicate story from yesterday... but at least it’s not a direct copy and pasta this has a little more information about the division name that made it...
  • A good meeting transcript does not include everything verbatim. I cannot wait to see people arguing about the integral transcript interpretation.
  • Semi-automated minutes of meeting would be great, because everyone hates writing them.

Too bad it's a nightmare to do privacy properly for this kind of an application. Their FAQ, in the section Privacy, sadly does nothing to allay such fears:
"Group Transcribe sends audio and text input from each app in use to Microsoft’s online speech recognition and translation technologies to transcribe, attribute and translate multi-speaker conversations."

It is easier to write an incorrect program than understand a correct one.
