Vaccination shots for COVID-19 were halted Friday at an El Paso County health clinic because of “irregularities” in vaccine storage and handling, according to state health officials.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment suspended the provider participation at the Dr. Moma Health and Wellness Clinic, according to a CDPHE news release.

“El Paso County Public Health alerted the Joint Vaccine Task Force after an inspection of the vaccination clinic where they observed failure to comply with storage protocols,” the release said.

The clinic, which has given 3,933 vaccines, will no longer receive doses as the investigation continues.

“CDPHE is working to determine whether the provider has records to show that storage protocols have been consistently adhered to, or if this was an isolated incident,” the release said. “Health officials do not believe patients at this site have cause for concern but are in the process of determining whether those previously vaccinated at this location will need to reinitiate their vaccine series.”

About 1,000 appointments were canceled Saturday, along with another 6,000 cancelations through May 8, the CDPHE said. State health officials are contacting people who had appointments to reschedule them to a different El Paso County clinic.
