SAN JOSE – A man suspected in a fatal shooting Wednesday afternoon in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood ended an overnight standoff with police by shooting and wounding himself, according to San Jose police.

He was being sought in connection with a shooting reported about 5:15 p.m. at or near a home in the 900 block of North Fourth Street. The man injured in that shooting died overnight, police said Thursday morning.

A police search for a suspect ensued, and at about 8 p.m., authorities closed North Fourth Street between East Hedding and East Younger streets, and also closed East Younger Street between Third and Fifth streets.

From Wednesday night into Thursday morning, police in tactical gear and an armored vehicle staged in front of the home. In a tweet the department said a suspect was barricaded inside a home and that nearby homes had been evacuated for safety.

Officers could be heard using a loudspeaker trying to coax the person into exiting and surrendering peacefully. At 8:40 a.m. Thursday, the department tweeted that the stalemate was over, and that the man was taken to a local hospital for a self-inflicted gunshot wound that left him with life-threatening injuries.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office has not formally released the name of the man who died. A man who went to the crime scene and identified himself as the victim’s father said the shooting site is the home of a woman who shared children with his son. The alleged shooter is a relative of the woman, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

The shooting victim’s death marked the city’s 12th homicide of the year. San Jose had recorded nine homicides at the same point in 2020.

Anyone with information about the shootings can contact the SJPD homicide unit at 408-277-5283 or leave a tip with Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at 408-947-7867 or at svcrimestoppers.org.
