2021 NFL mock draft: Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Trevon Moehrig

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are Super Bowl champions, and there’s nothing to suggest they can’t repeat again in 2021. Using Tom Brady’s black magic, the Bucs were somehow able to keep most of their 2020 roster intact, despite having 30 players facing free agency and dealing with a shrunken cap due to the pandemic.

So if you were sick of Brady’s reign over the entire league, you may want to find a different sport to check out this year.

But repeats are never easy in the NFL. Everyone will be gunning for the Bucs this year, which means the team will have to continue to build for the future through the NFL Draft. So in our Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft, the onus is on Cmonstar to... well, basically just not screw this up.

Before we get into the choice, see how the board has fallen thus far by checking out our POD Community Mock Draft tracker here.

Here’s Cmonstar with the pick:

With the 32nd overall pick Tampa Bay picks Trevon Moehrig, S TCU

The Champs are here and on the clock. What do you get the team that has everything? Tampa has a roster devoid of weakness. All 22 starters are back.

With that being said, a first-round pick should be able to come in and contribute right away. One way to accomplish that on a Super Bowl winning roster is to build depth in a rotation heavy position group. The safety group of Tampa Bay has two outstanding starters, Antoine Winfield, Jr. and Jordan Whitehead, but the depth beyond those two is questionable.

Trevon Moehrig is the top safety in the draft and has outstanding measurables, standing 6-foot-1 at a very solid 202 pounds. He clocked a 4.50 40-yard dash time while being less than 100 percent healthy. He has solid ball skills and is a willing and able downhill tackler in the run game. His time in the pass happy Big 12 will help ease his transition to the NFL.

Recent trends indicate that in the draft you should be looking for people who can either help your passing game or better defend against it. Trevon Moehrig helps with the latter.

Tampa’s Super Bowl win was predicated on a relentless pass rush and superior play in the back 7. Adding Trevon Moehrig to the roster is a continuation of the dominant defense in Tampa Bay.

Erik Schlitt’s thoughts:

The pick here is all about finding upgrades Brady’s black magic couldn’t reach. Adding a third safety in Moehrig is a great choice, as anytime you can grab the top player at his position at pick No. 32 is a tremendous advantage.

Another spot they could also pull off this feat is at defensive tackle, where Christian Barmore (Alabama) would give them longterm stability. Currently, the Bucs down defensive ends are Ndamukong Suh and William Gholston, and both are in the final year of their contracts. Barmore is an ideal player for the 3/4i/5-technique and would give them a strong three-man rotation bookending their interior defensive line.
