When the robots take over, I will either be their first victim or the first person they save.
Whether in the form of a vacuum or a grocery store attendant like Stop and Shop's googly-eyed Marty, I feel for them. They do their job with no thank yous, nor friends. It's this empathy (or insanity, probably) that made me invite not one but two robots into my small apartment to entertain and patrol my cats.
The Rocki Robot is a 7-inch-tall pet toy equipped with a camera, microphone, speaker, treat dispenser, and movable laser attachment, all controlled by an app on your phone. You can read more about the first robot pet toy we tried in our review of the Ebo, a small round bot with cute pixelated eyes and a Wall-E-like voice. Both of these toys are almost the perfect pet plaything, but not quite yet.
Watching this cute one-eyed bot turn around a corner with a cat in tow was adorable. Its camera and microphone give it a Cyclopean face. It has an alien-like tentacle with a laser atop its head, and a treat compartment where a mouth might be. You dispense treats via the app to keep your pet motivated to play.
The robot moves around flawlessly, thanks to its tireless, omnidirectional wheels. They can handle carpets and navigate the tricky landings between rooms, like the small wooden plank between my carpeted living room and tiled kitchen. It's also more maneuverable than the Ebo, which was harder to steer and often got trapped between boxes or other clutter. It moves a bit slower, which makes it much easier to direct.
The wheels, plus its size (as you can see from the photo above, it's much larger than the Ebo), means it can handle punches from excited paws or other obstacles, like other toys or shoes, without toppling over. The wheels also keep the camera steady, so the live feed is clear. You can control it without having to switch between watching the app screen and watching the robot itself. The battery life is also excellent. It lasted around five days, and fully recharged after being plugged in via USB-C cable for just a few hours.
