Original Oculus Quest VR Headset Will Work With Air Link 'Soon'

Mark Zuckerberg confirms Quest headset owners will be able to go wireless in the near future.

June 16, 2021

Back in April, the Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset got a killer feature in the form of the Air Link upgrade. It allows content to be streamed to the Quest 2 without a cable. Now Facebook has confirmed Air Link will soon work with the older Oculus Quest headset.

Confirmation of compatibility with the first-gen headset came via Mark Zuckerberg. Yesterday he published a post on Facebook talking about the new v30 system software coming to Quest. Then in the comments he wrote, "Air Link for Quest 1 is coming too," which unsurprisingly resulted in over 650 comments.

The Air Link is highly desirable as it helps with immersion in a VR experience. Relying on a cable not only limits movement, but you can't help but feel it as it creates a bit of drag, plus it's always in your mind not to move too far and potentially pull it out or drag your PC off the desk.

Zuckerberg didn't confirm when Oculus Quest owners can expect to get Air Link compatibility, but he wouldn't mention it if the feature wasn't almost ready to launch. The release date for the v30 system software also isn't known, but UploadVR did manage to confirm that it will include an increase to the virtual boundaries that can be handled. The current maximum is 10 meters (33 feet), but v30 pushes that up to 15 meters (49 feet) allowing for a total environment space of 2,400 square feet.
