PITTSBURG — The 25-year-old woman suspected of striking a Pittsburg man with her car and killing him in 2019 was convicted of a felony and two misdemeanors, prosecutors announced Tuesday.

Camille Thompson was convicted of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and destroying evidence, and a felony count of hit and run, according to the news release from the Contra Costa District Attorney. Thompson was charged months after the March 2019 crash that killed 42-year-old Felipe Ramirez-Estrella.

During Thompson’s December 2019 preliminary hearing, police investigators testified that after striking Ramirez-Estrella, the Mercedes she was driving made a U-turn, then drove, slowly, past Ramirez’s body before accelerating away from the site of the accident. Authorities say they recovered the Mercedes days later, at a residence in Pittsburg, where it was concealed in a carport, underneath a tarp.

Thompson told police she thought she’d struck a small animal, but the car had a large dent and other noticeable damage to its front end, according to police testimony. The defense also said Ramirez-Estrella was struck 100 feet away from the nearest sidewalk and claimed he was drunk, though his family told KTVU he was walking home from work at a nearby restaurant.

Thompson is set to be sentenced in August, according to prosecutors. She faces a maximum of six years in state prison.
