OAKLAND — Officers with local departments managed to save a man and dog trapped inside a vehicle that caught fire on an Oakland hills roadway, authorities said.

Shortly after 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, an Oakland police officer saw the car in the 4900 block of Park Boulevard and requested assistance.

Oakland and Piedmont police department officers responded, working together to free an unresponsive man from inside.

Oakland Fire Department firefighters also responded, providing care until taking him to a hospital for treatment.

The man and the dog’s conditions were not immediately available and investigators did not offer a cause for the crash Wednesday night, but Piedmont police said alcohol may have been a collision factor.

“We have fire extinguishers in our cars for just this kind of incident,” Piedmont police Capt. Chris Monahan said Wednesday, crediting second-year Piedmont police Officer Jason Germano’s responsiveness to an Oakland police call for assistance.

“We are glad everyone is safe, and no other vehicles were involved,” Piedmont police said in a social-media post Wednesday that showed images taken from one officer’s body-worn camera of the vehicle aflame.

“The Oakland Police Department, working with our neighboring law enforcement partners, continue to serve our community by protecting and saving lives everyday,” Oakland police said Wednesday.
