VIDEO: Dan Campbell gives a passionate speech to Lions fans at training camp

I’m pretty certain we wouldn’t have seen the last coach do something like this.

Before the Detroit Lions took the practice field on Saturday morning, head coach Dan Campbell took a couple minutes to address the fans in attendance. For the first time in two years, Lions fans—in Saturday’s case, season ticket holders only—were able to watch the team practice, and Campbell jumped on the opportunity to send a message to Lions Nation.

“You guys have been loyal fans for a long time and I know you’ve had a lot of heartbreak and there’s been a lot of adversity,” Campbell said. “And I can’t sit here and promise you anything, but man, we’re going to do everything we can. I told you that on Day 1 and we’re going to try to give you something that embodies who you are, all right?”

Campbell then spoke about the team’s underdog mentality. Currently, Vegas and national experts alike expect the Lions to compete for the first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Campbell’s retort? We’ll see.

“Everybody wants to count us out. That’s fine,” Campbell said. “We’re a bunch a losers. We’re all these things. That’s okay. We’ll just keep coming out here doing our work. We’ll do our work, get a little bit better every day, and when they show up, we’ll see what happens.”

To close out, Campbell gave the fans one request: Get loud.

“I’m telling you, and it’s the truth, we feed off your energy. We really do, man, and I’m a huge believer in energy. So, man, give us some energy. I know you guys will, but give us the energy today. I appreciate you guys.”
