Sunday open thread: What are you hoping to see during Week 2 of training camp?

With camp approaching its second week, it’s time for the pads to come on and the intensity to spike.

With one week of training camp coming to an end, it’s on to the next one, and soon things start to ramp up with the addition of pads in practice. The Detroit Lions’ new coaching staff rightfully took the slow approach during the first week of practice. You don’t want to overload the players physically, nor do you want to overload their brains with a new system right out of the gate.

While our own Jeremy Reisman and Erik Schlitt have done a fantastic job of giving their thoughts and observations so far, there usually isn’t a whole lot of information to be gained during padless practices. For instance, with the offensive and defensive line groups, it’s tough to get a sense of how these players perform with only shells on, but you can get a good grasp of where they stand on the depth chart.

Today’s Question of the Day is...

What do you hope to see during Week 2 of Lions training camp?

My answer: The offense making strides and having a better day than the defense for a day or two.

So far, reports have been coming in that the defense is dominating, which has been the case all across the league and isn’t all that surprising. It takes a while for an offense to get in a rhythm, especially in a new system. But with the pads coming on, it’s time to see the offensive line move some bodies around. After all, this is supposed to be our best unit.

With training camp, there are always tradeoffs. If the offense looks good, then the defense looks bad, and vice versa. But you never want to see one group dominating the entire time. That likely means that one side of the ball has a long way to catch up.

The Lions have the day off today, but they resume tomorrow, and are likely to have their first padded practice. You can catch up on all of our updates and stories here.
