A cidery in Michigan, Virtue Cider, now offers single-varietals in a quarterly subscription service.
As cider makers continue to hone their craft, food-friendly options have increased exponentially. Poured into stemware, the golden drinks shine at dinner; they are less filling than beer and lower in alcohol than wine. One way to explore a variety of ciders is with the new Cider Society subscription packages, offered quarterly, from Virtue Cider in Fennville, Mich. The first one, for the fall season, has four bottles of the company’s new single-varietal ciders, a change of pace since most ciders are blends. Golden Russet, Spitz, Baldwin and Jonathan, all lightly sparkling and deliciously dry, have distinctive profiles. There’s a whisper of mellow sweetness in the Golden Russet and the Spitz, and the Baldwin suggests sauvignon blanc. Next up, the winter box will offer four ciders from a line called the Mitten Series, aged in bourbon and rye barrels.
