Olivia Munn opened up to People about the excitement she and John Mulaney share about having a baby together, with the magazine reporting that the baby is due “later this year.”
But if Munn and Mulaney’s baby is really due “later this year” — say November or even at the end of December — its expected arrival date renews questions about Mulaney’s declared timeline of their romance.

During an interview with Seth Meyers earlier this month — when Mulaney, 39, announced that he and Munn, 41, were expecting a baby — he also made a point of saying that the romance started in “the spring.”
But for a baby due December 21, a pregnancy calculator from WhattoExpect.com says that the first trimester would have begun around March 16. Maybe it’s getting a bit technical to say that this date is before “the spring,” but the date certainly suggests that Mulaney and Munn wasted no time in making a baby, if they in fact starting dating in “the spring.”
There also are reports that Munn and Mulaney’s friends were talking openly about the pregnancy as early as July, Page Six reported. If the actress is expecting in later December, she already would be about 27 weeks pregnant, or a little more than six months, the pregnancy calculator says.
The when and how of Munn and Mulaney’s romance has drawn scrutiny, mainly because the timeline offered by Mulaney “appears to be tenuous,” as Page Six also reported. A celebrity agent who has worked with Munn offered up a possible reason that Mulaney’s description of when he and Munn got together has been iffy.
“It seems to me that he is going to great lengths to dispute the idea that he cheated,” the agent told Page Six.
Up until the world first learned that Munn and Mulaney were an item, fans assumed the “Saturday Night Live” alum was still with his wife of seven years, artist Anne Marie Tendler.
Before that, much of the attention on Mulaney over the past year had been on his spiral into addiction. He spent several months in rehab in 2020, leaving his most recent two-month inpatient stay in February, as Page Six also reported. He then entered an out-patient program.
Mulaney talked with Seth Meyers on his late-night NBC show about his roller coaster year: “I went to rehab in September, I got out in October, I moved out of my home from my ex-wife,” referring to Tendler. “Then in the spring I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia.”
But there was more: “We’re having a baby together,” Mulaney said. “I’m gonna be a dad!”
The celebrity agent told Page Six it’s no “coincidence that John broke the news of Olivia’s pregnancy the way he did in terms of basically giving a timeline of his past few months.
But some of Mulaney’s claims have been undermined. For example, he didn’t file for divorce from Tendler until February, the same month he left rehab. A source close to Tendler told Page Six that he had in fact asked for the divorce in February, not after leaving his earlier rehab stint in October, as he suggested to Meyers.
News that Mulaney and Tendler were divorcing also didn’t come to light until May, after Page Six and People broke the news that he was dating Munn.
“I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage,” Tendler told Page Six in May. “I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”
It turns out that Tendler may have been blindsided by news of his romance with Munn, according to reports. It also appears that she had been putting up with a lot as she supported Mulaney through his addiction struggles.
“Anna Marie knew he was doing things with other women before he went to rehab in December,” the insider told Page Six. “And his claims to friends that he was trying to protect her before he went away to rehab were rubbish, she didn’t need protecting.
“John was using Anna Marie to protect himself,” the source added.
Certainly, Mulaney’s relationship with Munn came as something of a surprise to many people, given that the glamorous star is best known for dating handsome actors and athletes. Her most recent high-profile romance was with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Munn and Rodgers dated from 2014 to 2017. He’s now engaged to another Hollywood actress, “Big Little Lies” star Shailene Woodley.
But there are plenty of indications that Mulaney and Munn knew each other well long before “the spring,” according to reports. Another Page Six source definitely disputed the idea, originally reported by People, that the couple met “in church.”
“That was BS, and Twitter immediately called Olivia out on it, saying she’s known John for years,” the insider told Page Six.
Mulaney and Munn both attended Meyers’ 2013 wedding to Alexi Ashe in Martha’s Vineyard, Page Six said. They also were seen on camera together in November 2017 for the Jon Stewart HBO special, “Night of Too Many Stars.” In December, when Mulaney returned to rehab, Munn publicly offer her support, tweeting “Sending SO MUCH love and support to John Mulaney. You got this.”
While Page Six reported that it’s not “entirely clear” when their romance started, a source said: “There have been rumors for months about her being pregnant, and it all just seems like a very tight timeline.”
Meanwhile, Mulaney’s decision to plunge into a romance with Munn has raised questions in addiction and recovery circles.
While Mulaney seemed over-the-moon happy on Meyers’ show, talking about falling in love with Munn and starting a family, he also acknowledged his tumultuous year. According to a well-known recommendation for people in recovery, it’s not a good idea for newly sober single alcoholics and addicts to add to the tumult; that’s why they should wait a year before dating or launching new relationships.
The first year of sobriety is said to be challenging, while a new love new interest can become a distraction from the spiritual aspects of recovery, as recommended by 12-step programs, according to a USA Today report. Experts also said that people in early recovery aren’t stable emotionally. They may use the euphoria of a new romance to replace the high of alcohol or drugs, while their new relationships can also be unstable and potentially volatile.
