SUNNYVALE – A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of killing a family member in Sunnyvale, authorities said.

Officers were called to the 800 block of Shetland Place at 9:35 a.m. Tuesday for a report of an elderly man who was unconscious and not breathing, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said in a news release. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the victim’s name will not be released until next-of-kin notifications are completed by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

Because the victim appeared to have suffered traumatic injuries, authorities opened a homicide investigation and identified Ryan Cox as a person of interest. Officers arrested Cox in San Jose and booked him into Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of murder.

Authorities described the killing as an “isolated event” and said the victim and the suspect were related to each another. They did not release any other information about the case.

Anyone with information related to the case can contact Detective Barron Renzi at 408-730-7100.
