Northern Michigan’s Michael Van Unen Suspended Two Games

The college hockey season is back in full swing, and unfortunately, that also means a return of supplemental discipline for players that cross the line on the ice. And the 2021-2022 season got off to an ignominious start last weekend when Northern Michigan defenseman Michael Van Ulen was issued a two-game suspension by the CCHA for a hit to the head against St. Thomas’ Christiano Versich on Saturday evening.

Two-game suspensions are rare in college hockey, although in this instance, Van Unen may be lucky that it was only two games given the devastating nature of the hit, seen below:

Van Unen received a five-minute major and game misconduct on the ice. He will miss Northern Michigan’s game next weekend against Notre Dame as well as a game on October 22nd against Bemidji State.
