SAN JOSE — A complex of nearly 100 affordable homes near downtown San Jose has taken a big step forward with the purchase of the property by the project’s developer.

Berkeley-based Resources for Community Development, acting through an affiliate, has bought a site of 0.6 acres at the corner of South Almaden Avenue and West Virginia Street in San Jose.

The developer has proposed a project at this site where affordable homes would sprout next to one of the gateways to downtown San Jose.

“The six-story project will provide 99 affordable apartments, with ground-floor commercial space,” Resources for Community Development stated in its proposal filed with San Jose city planners.

The development firm paid just under $3.6 million for the five parcels that make up the project site, documents filed on Oct. 15 with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office show.

The affiliate, Almaden Affordable Housing, also obtained a $6.3 million loan from Supportive Housing Solutions at the time of the property purchase, according to the county documents.

El Grullo Taqueria y Mariscos, a Mexican restaurant, once operated on the site but is now closed.

The project calls for a wide range of affordable residences, the planning documents show.

“The apartments include 25 permanent supportive housing units, 41 extremely low-income units, and 32 low-income units,” Resources for Community Development stated in the proposal.

The development is slated to include 30 studios, 24 one-bedroom units, 25 two-bedroom family units and 20 three-bedroom units for families, the planning documents show.

Resources for Community Development is eyeing an array of amenities for the project.

“The ground-floor amenities include a community room, office space for supportive housing staff, office space for the building property manager, a lobby and reception area and a mail area,” according to the proposal.
