In 2019, Texas mom Kaitlin Burge shared a gut-wrenching photo to illustrate how childhood cancer impacts the whole family.

In the image, Kaitlin’s son Beckett, who was battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, was seen leaning over a toilet as his sister Aubrey comforted him.

"Vomiting between play sessions. Waking up to throw up. Standing by her brother's side and rubbing his back while he gets sick," Kaitlin wrote at the time. "Going from 30 lbs to 20 lbs. This is childhood cancer."

Two years later, Beckett, 6, is cancer-free — he received his last treatment in August and had his port removed last week. But the first grader and Aubrey, 7, remain attached the hip.

“They walk to and home from school together. Even though they each have their own rooms, they sleep together,” Kaitlin told TODAY Parents. “Those two have an unbreakable bond. She’s often the first person he goes to when he needs help with something. I'm like, 'What the heck? I'm right over here!'"

Recently, when Beckett was having a hard day at school, his teacher brought him to Aubrey.

“She knows exactly how to comfort him,” Kaitlin explained. “Aubrey is very motherly. She knows what to do."

The Burge family — Kaitlin and her husband, Matthew, are also parents to 3-year-old daughter, Chandler — plan to celebrate Beckett’s clean bill of health with a trip to the beach.

“He doesn’t care which beach as long as there are no sharks!” Kaitlin laughed.

After more than three years of chemotherapy and hospital overnights, the Burges are all slowly adjusting to their normal. Beckett is playing baseball and Aubrey is doing competitive cheer.

“Sometimes when I’m by myself, l’ll start crying… just thinking about everything he went through. I mean, there was a time when doctors were telling us that Beckett was going to die. They sent a chaplain up and everything," Kaitlin revealed. “He’s overcome every obstacle that been thrown at him. And I'm just so grateful he's here."
