Due to ~royal protocol~ and ~royal rules~, Kate Middleton and Prince William don’t show a ton of PDA during public events. Like, the vibe is pretty professional most of the time. But these two recently stepped out for the Earthshot Prize Awards and went ahead and posted some cute behind-the-scenes pics of themselves looking all kinds of loved-up with some PDA. And by that I mean they’re literally just kinda leaning into each other and touching, so don’t get too excited. These two are still miles away from making out on a red carpet like Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly do.

In case you’re wondering what, exactly, the rules of royal PDA are, it kinda depends on the event. Royal etiquette expert Myka Meier once explained to People that “senior members of the royal family would likely not be told how to interact or when they can or cannot show PDA and would be trusted to use their better judgment as to when it’s appropriate. The royals often adjust PDA to mirror the formality of the event they are attending. At a somber or more formal event, we are less likely to see PDA than at a casual event where it would be deemed more fitting.”

William and Kate rarely show PDA when at public events, but they have shared several public kisses over the years—most notably at their wedding and at various polo matches (because there’s nothing hotter than polo, apparently!).
