Fairfield’s surveillance cameras were used to make an arrest in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist, police said.

The bicyclist, a 53-year-old Fairfield man, was fatally struck around 7 p.m. Tuesday at Texas and Wisconsin streets. The driver fled the scene.

A witness was able to provide a description of the vehicle, and investigators began searching the city’s surveillance camera system, said Lt. Jausiah Jacobsen, the Fairfield Police Department’s public information officer.

“Ultimately, they were able to find the suspect vehicle” using the department’s license plate reader system, Jacobsen said. The vehicle was identified as Nissan SUV; images of the suspected driver were obtained from a business’ surveillance video.

That night, the vehicle was found at a residence, and a 31-year-old Fairfield man was arrested.

He was booked into Solano County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder; DUI causing bodily injury; having a blood-alcohol level greater than the legal limit of .08 percent; a probation violation for a previous DUI conviction; and hit-and-run causing death or injury, all felonies.

The investigation continues and “alcohol impairment is considered to be a factor,” Jacobsen said.

The suspect’s next court appearance, at which he may be arraigned, is 1:30 p.m. Friday, jail records show.

The Solano County coroner late Wednesday afternoon declined to release the name of the victim because the next of kin had not been notified.
