This attempt at a first orbital launch from Europe lasted about 30 seconds.

Drone footage provided by Isar Aerospace (a startup incubated as part of the Bavaria One space program) shows the first test flight of its Spectrum orbital vehicle in Norway. The flight termination system was triggered before it attempted a first-stage separation, and the rocket fell into the sea, though Isar called it a success and said it has more vehicles in production.

Andoya Spaceport general manager Ingun Berget told TV 2 the flight was aborted because the rocket wasn’t where it was supposed to go.

Apple’s future M chip plans come into focus.

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter notes Apple’s push for an AI agent-powered “Project Mulberry” upgrade for its Health app next year, and that its its long-running attempt noninvasive glucose monitoring via Apple Watch sensors is still “many years away.” (Here’s more on why that’s been so difficult).

But if you’re into hardware, he reports new M5 iPad Pros are already in testing in addition to work on 2027-targeted M6 editions with Apple’s in-house modems, and while the regularly scheduled MacBook Pro M5 refresh is “a lock” for this year, a design overhaul may not come until its M6 update in 2026.

Here’s what military planning usually looks like — and why it doesn’t include Signal

End-to-end encryption is useful, secure, and reliable. But it’s just not enough.

Digital Foundry confirms ‘VRR stutter’ reports on PS5 and PS5 Pro.

The framerate counters over at Digital Foundry looked into reports of noticeable stutters every eight seconds for games like Elden Ring and Spider-Man Remastered while using variable refresh rate, testing 19 games with a number of displays and comparing to Xbox versions where available.

Some games they tested (Gran Turismo 7, God of War Ragnarok) didn’t have the problem, and while it’s unclear why it is happening, it does seem to be PS5-specific, and sometimes takes 20 minutes or more to show up.

Trump’s censor in chief targets Disney for a DEI investigation.

As reported by the New York Times and CNBC, FCC chair Brendan Carr has followed up on a previous threat against Disney in a new letter (pdf). Now he says its enforcement bureau will investigate to see if it’s “violating FCC equal employment opportunity regulations by promoting invidious forms of DEI discrimination.”

Along with an administration-wide push to remake government and industry that targets the catch-all buzzword, Carr has said it will be a focus for merger and acquisition approvals, and has begun inquiries into other companies.

“Dear Mr. Iger, I am writing to inform you that I have asked the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau to open an investigation into Disney and ABC. In particular, I want to ensure that Disney and ABC have not been violating FCC equal employment opportunity regulations by promoting invidious forms of DEI discrimination. While I have seen reports that Disney recently walked back some of its DEI programs, significant concerns remain.”

X + xAI = $113 billion.

As Wall Street Journal reporter Meghan Bobrowsky highlights, the valuations used for Elon Musk’s all-stock combo platter of X companies were negotiated in an... interesting way.

The WSJ article also mentions “Executives at the companies, which share personnel, believe it will be easier to raise money for the combined businesses under xAI than it would be separately,” and that all shares of X and xAI will be exchanged for shares in a new company: xAI Holdings Corp.

Amazon Photos puts Amazon shopping in your photo album.

Former Microsoft and now Amazon exec Panos Panay announced that Amazon has added the photo library feature everyone was asking for: shopping links. The image storage service’s search uses image recognition to analyze your photos and surface products it thinks you’re searching for, then pop up a lens icon over them so you can buy them on Amazon.

It’s unclear from the help page whether turning off the Tag Photos feature will shut this down if you’d like to opt out -- we’ve contacted Amazon for more info.

Trump commutes Ozy Media founder Carlos Watson’s fraud sentence.

In July, Carlos Watson was convicted on fraud charges for misleading investors with falsified financial records, inflated audience numbers, and made-up business deals. The New York Times reported in 2021 that his co-founder, Samir Rao, had impersonated a YouTube exec on a call with bankers about a potential $40 million investment.

But now that Donald Trump commuted his 116-month sentence on the day he was scheduled to report, Watson won’t even start. The one-year probation for the now-defunct Ozy, as well as $96 million in restitution and penalties, have also been wiped away.

    Donald Trump pardons BitMEX co-founders.

Less than three months after the BitMEX crypto exchange was hit with a $100 million fine for money laundering – and hours after he pardoned ex-Nikola CEO Trevor Milton for defrauding investors in his EV company – Trump issued pardons to Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Dalo and Samuel Reed, CNBC reported Friday. The three men had previously pled guilty to several felony charges related to money laundering and failure to police the exchange.

You might have a hard time getting a Switch 2.

That’s according to a report from Insider Gaming that states US retailers might not have enough Switch 2 consoles to meet pre-order demands. The report also says that pre-orders for the console are set to go live on April 9th, a week after the Switch 2 direct on April 2nd. The Switch 2 is rumored to release in early June and Nintendo has previously said it’s “taking risks” to ensure it can meet demands.

Nintendo’s news app struggled to deliver the Zelda movie info.

Nintendo chose to announce a release window for its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie in the new Nintendo Today! app that only launched 24 hours ago. However, there was enough demand to pull up the brief video clip that Nintendo of Japan had to tweet about the issues.

I haven’t seen the information shared directly via Nintendo’s social media channels on X, Instagram, or YouTube -- if this is how we find out key info about the Switch 2 next week, then I hope it’s up to the task.

Screenshot of X post from @Nintendo saying, “The Nintendo Today! app has been experiencing heavy traffic which caused display issues with some contents, which have now been resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.”

Even the driver on JVC Kenwood’s wooden Bluetooth speaker is made of wood.

If you’re on the hunt for a Bluetooth speaker not made of bright plastic or filled with flashing lights, JVC Kenwood’s WDS-01 is made of oak, cedar, pine, spruce, or walnut wood including its 60-millimeter driver cone.

Battery life is claimed to be up to eight hours, but availability is going to be a challenge. Only 100 custom-made units were released in Japan today, ranging in price from around $257 to $550.

The six-watt WDS-01 wireless speker is recharged using USB-C.
Despite the premium pricing, JVC Kenwood warns that since it’s made of solid wood warping or cracking may occur over time.
There is no water resistance. JVC Kenwood recommends keeping it dry and away from sunlight to preserve its appearance.

AI is going to make personalized ads even creepier.

We talked about this on the Vergecast today, but Nvidia showed off fully AI-generated ads recently, something it’s been testing with big partners like Unilever. If you’re wondering why big platform companies like Meta and Google are so excited about AI video generation, it’s because the dream is to serve an infinite variety of custom personalized video ads after a brand uploads some basic creative assets and demographic targeting information. Get ready, it’s going to get weird.
