About 80 people are confirmed to have died after a migrant boat got into difficulty off the coast of Gran Canaria, Spain's Maritime Rescue organisation has said.

At least five African migrants died after their boat encountered trouble at sea. Forty-four survivors were rescued and brought to safety near Gran Canaria. Survivors reported being adrift for nearly a month without provisions. Many migrants suffered dehydration and illness after drinking seawater. The Atlantic route to the Canary Islands remains a dangerous journey.
